The THERMOSI project was prominently featured at the 5th International Conference on Phosphor Thermometry (ICPT 2026) in June 2026, with three presentations showcasing key advances from the project. The talks and poster demonstrated progress in materials characterisation, the development of practical phosphor thermometry instrumentation, and new capabilities for high-temperature measurement and calibration.

Against the backdrop of one of the hottest weeks of the year, NPL welcomed leading researchers and industry experts from around the world for the 5th International Conference on Phosphor Thermometry (ICPT2026), held from 24–26 June 2026 at its Teddington site.

The three-day conference highlighted the latest scientific advances and emerging applications of luminescent thermometry and measurement technologies. Contributors presented cutting-edge research spanning fundamental materials synthesis, industrial process monitoring, emergent biomedical applications and the growing role of artificial intelligence. The event provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, discussion and collaboration, fostering connections between scientists, engineers and industrial practitioners working across a diverse range of sectors.

Organised by NPL Temperature and Humidity group with a strong support from Events, ICPT2026 featured a high-quality programme of seven invited talks, thirty-six contributed presentations and a poster session, roundtable discussions, and laboratory tours. The conference attracted nearly 60 attendees from Europe, North America and Asia, highlighting the global significance of phosphor thermometry and its increasing importance in addressing measurement challenges in research and industry.

A highlight of the conference was the presentation of two prestigious awards recognising outstanding scientific contributions:

• Best Overall Presentation or Poster Award – Sponsored by Measurement Science and Technology: Winner: Professor Andries Meijerink, Utrecht University, Netherlands. Presentation Title: Sense and Sensibility in Sensing. The ICPT2026 Scientific Committee selected the presentation for its exceptional clarity, relevance and highly engaging delivery.
• Best Early Career Presentation or Poster Award – sponsored by Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances: Winner: Mohammad Rashik Niaz, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany. Presentation Title: Measuring Particle Surface Temperature in Non-Premixed Packed-Bed Combustion via Lifetime-Based Phosphor Thermometry. The Scientific Committee recognised the work for its clear and concise presentation style, novel subject matter and excellent communication of innovative research.

Authors who presented at the conference have been encouraged to submit their work to the ICPT2026 Measurement Science and Technology Special Issue, which will be guest edited by members of NPL’s Temperature and Humidity Team: Gavin Sutton, Aldo Mendieta and Caroline Winters.
